Services

In the Swahili language, the word ubora means excellence. In keeping with its mission
to produce excellent student outcomes, U-Bora Education Services (U-BES) has a
passing grade of 85% across all subjects and all educational activities. Further,
regarding its students, staff, and volunteers, U-BES holds similarly high standards for
the practice and nurturing of its stated values.

Tutoring (JK-Grade 8)

  • Online and in-person enrichment and remedial services in English language, French, Science, and Mathematics

  • One-on-one or in small groups

Ongoing tutoring is essential for effective and lasting growth. Whether enrichment or remedial, U-BES strongly recommends that tutoring is embraced as a permanent, continuous, term-over-term fixture of a child’s education.  This, rather than a one-off or limited periodic engagement that is meant to solve an immediate problem (e.g. tutoring to help a child “catch up”), is more likely to ensure excellence in a child’s academic performance. Whether enrichment or remedial, ongoing tutoring is essential for effective and lasting growth.

English Language Program

U-Bora Education Services (U-BES) elevates students' skills in the areas of reading and writing.  Students learn to decode text, read for understanding, and make connections between what they have read and the world around them.  At U-BES, where the pass mark stands at 85%, students are exposed to challenging texts that drive them to achieve at a higher level.

Moreover, from learning to write a simple paragraph to mastering the skills associated with a more challenging thesis, students are taught to support their points of view with substantial evidence.  At U-BES, these skills, in addition to the ability to create their own narrative texts, persuasive essays, and additional forms of writing are taught, nurtured, and eventually mastered.

At U-Bora Education Services, our successful language learners:

  • understand that language learning is a necessary, life-enhancing, reflective process;

  • communicate – that is, read, listen, view, speak, write, and represent – effectively and with confidence;

  • make meaningful connections between themselves, what they encounter in texts, and the world around them;

  • think critically;

  • understand that all texts advance a particular point of view that must be recognized, questioned, assessed, and evaluated;

  • appreciate the cultural impact and aesthetic power of texts;

  • use language to interact and connect with individuals and communities, for personal growth, and for active participation as world citizens.

Engish Language
  • Educational and recreational programs delivered in July

The summer break provides a great opportunity for student enrichment.  It is a time when students are not managing both school and ongoing tutoring and can give their full attention to a singular stream of instructions. U-BES’ current Summer Learning Program is centered on the delivery of a singular subject that, each year, is highlighted for special attention.

In-school events (JK-Grade 8)

  • In-school workshops and celebratory events that provide learning and recreational opportunities to students and parents

In-school workshops for students may include full-day programming such as Super Science, Read and Write Extravaganza, and Minds on Math. Celebratory events may consist of Student Awards Night and Black History Month celebrations.

An examination of EQAO data since 2010 shows a disappointing trend regarding Ontario students’ mastery of math skills:

Are students performing poorly in math because they don’t like math? Do students like certain subjects because they perceive themselves as being good at that subject?

Here’s a classic chicken or egg type question: Does confidence give rise to better skills or does mastery of a skill give rise to the educational risk-taking needed to learn a new skill? How much more confident would your child be if he was already familiar with the math concept his teacher was introducing today? If your child learned new vocabulary and skills on an ongoing basis, would her confidence grow?

According to the TDSB’s 2011 Census Portrait of Black students, whereas when children are in the elementary grades, the majority of parents of Caribbean households expect their children to attend university, when children are in the secondary grades, that expectation drops to less than half. For parents of Eastern African and Western African households, there is also a drop though not as dramatic:

At U-Bora Education Services, we have been serving Black families since 2018 and our parent testimonials speak for themselves. Many Canadian parents see tutoring as an effective means to helping their children stay ahead and consequently, excel in their studies. Elementary students with strong math and literacy skills are well-positioned to succeed in Advanced Placement (AP) courses in secondary school. In addition, “…early success often carries forward into later grades, whereas many students who struggle early on continue struggling throughout their schooling. Notably:

  • students who meet the provincial standard early in their schooling are most likely to maintain that high achievement in secondary school. Of the students who had met the provincial standard in both Grade 3 and Grade 6, 91% met it again in Grade 9 in the academic mathematics course and 75% met it again in Grade 9 in the applied mathematics course.

  • students who do not meet the provincial standard early in their schooling are most likely to struggle in later grades. Of the students who had met the provincial standard in neither Grade 3 nor Grade 6, only 51% met the standard in Grade 9 in the academic mathematics course and only 29% did in the applied mathematics course.” 3

We at U-Bora Education Services (U-BES) are dedicated to supporting Black families and we look forward to discussing how we can become part of your child’s educational success.
